Learning how to pose couples isn’t easy! Thankfully, it is a bit easier when your two subjects are so in love! Even with that, the engagement session or wedding day is generally the first time most people have been in front of a camera in a professional sense. They can be nervous and anxious, so keeping the mood light is key. Here are my four tips that helps with posing couples so that you can capture their love.
Posing is intimidating and most couples are unsure what to do – especially with their hands. Give your couple something to do to help them relax. For example, help them with hand placement, instruct them on where to turn their face, what to do when they walk towards the camera, etc. You want to make the couple feel comfortable and confident in their photos and giving them an activity helps with this.
This may feel silly to do, but demonstrating a pose is super effective. Mirror your couple and give them an example of you doing a certain pose. This will help boost their confidence and extinguish their anxieties. It will make it more fun and get everyone laughing.
During your session, when you take an image that’s flattering of them, show your couple that perfect stunning photo you captured! This will ease their stress and help them to relax and trust you.
You will want to save the most complicated poses for the end. No matter how experienced or inexperienced they might be in front of the camera, there is always that warming up period. That’s why I like to start off slow and easy and move into more complex poses. As you photograph your couple, gauge how they are feeling. Start implementing more complicated poses once you know the couple is warmed up and having fun.
